What's
happening at lily's door photography
Wedding
season is in full swing!
We have been flat out with both weddings
and enquiries from couples wanting to book the photography
for their special day. I have noticed that couples
are wanting smaller, more intimate weddings lately with
fewer guests - in fact we have done two weddings in
January with only 2 guests each! Weekday weddings
and morning services are also on the rise... As we prefer
candid, contemporary, documentary style wedding photography,
this suits us perfectly!

Planning your
Wedding
There is nothing more exciting and emotional
than planning a wedding! My advice is to get organised
early - don't put things off too long. We are
having to say we are unable to do the wedding photography
to quite a few customers every week. It is best
to choose your photographer when you set the date. Your
wedding day is not a dress rehearsal so it is important
your photographer gets it right! Choosing the
photographer for your wedding is so important, the right
photographer is an investment worth researching. Wedding
photography has become an art form. Each photographer
has a signature style. There are many different
photography styles around;
Traditional: Traditional photography
focuses on the day as a whole, incorporating images
from before the wedding, the service, group shots and
the reception. It is predominately shot in colour.
The photography tends to be more 'staged' so your
photographer/s will tell you where and how to stand,
how to smile etc
Candid: A more relaxed style.
Usually incorporating the group shots but the
photographer will also do less formal and impromptu
pictures - more black and white and sepia photography
is included than with the traditional style.
Contemporary: Natural photographs capture
the moment and formal photographs are kept to a minimum.
The posing is less structured and more artistic.
Shots are like still photos from a movie and tell
a story. Contemporary photography allows the photographer
to experiment with different looks, colours and effects
which results in a stunning hard cover coffee table
book!
Journalistic/Photojournalism:
Journalistic/Photojournalism photography captures the
emotion and story of your day. Subjects are mostly unaware
they are being photographed resulting in amazingly natural
photos which tell the joy and emotion of the day completely.
This style of photography is totally informal
and relaxed. Rather than posing for all your pictures,
the photographer will follow you around throughout the
day capturing the candid moments such as guests greeting
each other, bridesmaids fussing over the dress, couples
getting caught in the rain (as above) Journalistic
photography is quite often shot more in black and white
than colour.
Creating a balance: As
I mentioned above, each photographer has a signature
style but a good photographer can blend their photography
to give you a mix of styles to suit your requirements.
A great balance of styles gives you a lovely mix
of colour, black and white and sepia. it allows
you to include some posed styles of the bride
and groom and family photos and then afterwards tell
the story with casual, much more relaxed images.
So, once you have an idea of the style
you are wanting, start looking up professional photographers.
Don't hesitate to look outside your local area
as most photographers are prepared to travel. Visit
their studios, view their work, discuss your requirements
and budget. Ask to see current work from recent
weddings. MAKE SURE the photographer you are speaking
to is the photographer who will be shooting your wedding
on the day!
Study the examples
of work - check the quality.
Do you like the
coffee table books - their colours, construction?
Do you see variety
in the images?
Is there a good
mix of candid and formal? - Colour and Black and white?
Would you like
that coffee table book for you own?
On the personal side: You want
your wedding photographs to reflect the essence of your
personalities and the emotion of the day. An experienced
photographer will make you feel at ease and give you
encouragement and advice. A good wedding photographer
is patient, professional, friendly and helpful. Trust
your gut feeling about them - it usually tells you all
you need to know - your photographer will be sharing
many intimate moments with you (see the getting ready
shots below). If you don't feel comfortable with them
then they are probably not the photographer for you.
I have included
more information for you in the wedding
section of this website.
Booking
your photography session
I am currently booked out at least 2
weeks in advance for our weekday photography sittings
and over a month for weekend sessions so please book
in early to avoid disappointment. While I always ‘shuffle’
appointments to make time for my repeat customers, it
is sometimes hard to organise! I have also been asked
about location shoots, with the warmer weather many
people are wanting either the beach or a park for some
natural outdoor photos. The sitting fee is still $75
for photos in the Nowra/Bomaderry area. if you are wanting
photos at the beach, the rate is $100 to cover the fuel
and time. If you are looking for some inspiration, the
beach is amazing in the afternoon for photos. The afternoon
light hitting the water makes a stunning backdrop. I
often use local parks or the showground in the Nowra
area, as you can see below they make for natural, colourful
photos!

New
canvas supplier
I now have a new supplier for our canvas
prints. David & Mel do a fantastic job. They use
only genuine Epson Ultra-chrome ink on your prints which
allows them to guarantee your prints fade resistant
for a life-time. They also only use high quality matte
finish, pH neutral artist stretch canvas designed for
long-term, fade resistant photo reproductions. The polyester/cotton
blend canvas has a specifically designed coating which
delivers superior colour gamut and resolution, with
the added bonus of being water resistant when printed
with UV inks. After lots of looking around, I have to
say the finish and quality is excellent.
Using
nature in our photography
People often ask about bringing in a
toy for your child to be photographed with. If
you feel a familiar toy may make your children feel
more comfortable or if you are wanting particular toys
in your photos, then by all means bring those. I love
to use nature in the outdoor photos, a dandelion, seed
pods, or even a hole in the fence make great 'props'
as quite often the nicest shots are when the children
are completely absorbed in their surroundings and are
not even aware you are taking their photo just like
the little ones below!
Celebration
of life books
I am sure most of you have seen our
Coffee Table Books. We can now offer a service where
you or your family can have your favourite photos, negatives,
certificates, children's paintings etc professionally
scanned and designed to be printed up into one of our
hard cover coffee table books. We are calling them our
‘Celebration of life’ books and they are wonderful
keepsakes. A great way to get all the old memories out
of the drawers and have them organised in the one place!
Your book can have up to 100 pages and comes in a variety
of colours and styles. They are great for old family
photos, grandparents, your family history (we can include
your family tree), newborn books, remembering the life
of a loved one, family holidays, sporting events, retirement,
school formals, you can even have your old wedding photos,
certificates and telegrams scanned and printed into
a gorgeous book complete with your own wording, lyrics
from your bridal waltz and captions from your wedding
vows to treasure forever. All you need to do is give
us the pictures and anything else you would like included
in your book and we will do all the scanning & graphic
design for you! If you are thinking of getting a Coffee
Table Book for a gift for someone for Christmas, please
remember we would need to start the planning by early
November at the latest as they are very popular. We
would need to allow time for scanning, design, proofing,
printing, binding and postage. These books are
printed on archival paper and the quality is fantastic.
Hats are great!
Anyone who knows me is aware that I
love photos of children wearing hats, they tend to make
such great frames for little faces! I have included
a few photos taken recently to prove my point!

Frames

Because we care for the environment,
we now have more of our beautiful 100% recycled hand-made
frames in stock. These are a great idea for Christmas
presents. As they are all hand-made and one of
a kind you simply choose the frame you love and your
favourite photo from your photography session and we
will take that frame off the wall and have your image
framed and mounted for you - literally what you see
is what you get! There is a variety of colours,
shapes and sizes for you to choose from.
If you are looking for a more contemporary
frame we can now also offer you a framing service. No
need to shop around for your frames, our supplier has
a large variety of frames for you to choose from at
very affordable prices.
Our photoblocks are becoming popular
and are available in small, medium, large and now mega-block
sizes. You can also have your image printed into
panoramic sized blocks - great for your storyboards!
